Oceans Alive Trust
Oceans Alive Trust is a non-profit organisation supporting coastal communities in Kuruwitu in setting up and managing Marine Protected Areas (MPAS).
In 2023, a new partnership formed between Mars Sustainable Solutions and Kenyan-based non-profit organisation, Oceans Alive Trust, to restore degraded reefs across Kuruwitu. Oceans Alive Trust is founded on the value of partnerships and thanks to the work in collaboration with organisations of different sectors they can sustainably manage the marine resources for the communities that rely on them.
Kuruwitu is a place of extraordinary beauty and resilience on the Central Kenyan coast. This coastal community has led the way in ocean conservation, first by establishing a 30-hectare community-protected area and later expanding their efforts into a 12,000-hectare collaborative management zone in which 8,000 coral colonies were outplanted.
Today, in partnership with Oceans Alive, they are restoring coral reefs through innovative methods like the MARS Reef Star approach, safeguarding vulnerable reef ecosystems for future generations. So far, the team and the local community have successfully 84 reef stars, outplanting more than 750 coral fragments.
