Holiday Inn Resort Maldives
The Holiday Inn Reefscaping Project aims to revive and rebuild a healthy coral reef around our Maldives resort.
Background
Holiday Inn Resort® Kandooma forms part of the IHG group where sustainability is at the forefront of more than 100 IHG Hotels & Resorts in over 100 countries. Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives demonstrates a deep commitment to environmental stewardship by integrating innovative eco-conscious initiatives across its operations. The resort generates renewable energy through a large-scale solar panel installation that cuts carbon emissions by an estimated 215 tonnes annually, while also exploring wave energy solutions and providing filtered water in reusable glass bottles to reduce plastic. Its marine conservation efforts include coral reef “reefscaping,” turtle- and manta-focused programs, and educational experiences with marine biologists through the Aqua Discovery Centre
As part of Holiday inn Kandooma Marine Conservation program recognizing the importance of coral reefs Holiday Inn partnered with Mars to help revitalize their house reef. In November 2022, Mars Sustainable Solutions trained the team at Holiday Inn Kandooma to restore their house reef installing 100 Reef Stars on the degraded house reef, outplanting 1,500 coral fragments.
With plans to expand their pilot site in November 2025, Holiday Inn Kandooma is demonstrating to others that efficient, cost effective and scalable restoration is possible.
