Restoration in a Volatile World: Rethinking Coral Reef Restoration for the Future
Coral Awareness Week is more than an opportunity to celebrate coral reefs. It's a chance to rethink what reef restoration looks like in a rapidly changing and increasingly volatile world.
As ocean temperatures rise, coral reefs are entering another period of unprecedented environmental pressure. El Niño conditions are now underway and are forecast to strengthen through the second half of 2026 and into early 2027. Combined with long-term ocean warming, this increases the likelihood of marine heatwaves and widespread coral bleaching across many reef systems.
For those working in reef restoration, this raises an important question:
Are we restoring reefs based on the past, or preparing them for the future?
At Building Coral, we believe restoration must do both. Protecting reefs today means designing restoration methods that can withstand tomorrow's challenges.
What is El Niño and how does it affect coral reefs?
El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a naturally occurring climate cycle that influences ocean temperatures and weather patterns around the world.
During an El Niño event, sea surface temperatures increase across many tropical regions. When temperatures remain just 1–2°C above normal for extended periods, corals experience heat stress.
Corals rely on microscopic symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) living inside their tissues to provide much of their food through photosynthesis. When water becomes too warm, corals expel these algae, causing them to turn white - a process more commonly known as coral bleaching.
Bleached corals are not immediately dead, but they are weakened, energy-deprived and more susceptible to disease. If high temperatures persist for too long, many will not recover.
Preparing reefs for a more volatile future
Across the Building Coral program, scientists, researchers, restoration practitioners and local communities are continually refining how restoration is delivered.
Together, we're exploring:
- New approaches to coral reproduction and larval restoration.
- Restoration methodologies that can be adapted to different reef systems.
- Improved monitoring to better understand reef health and recovery.
- Forecast-informed planning that allows restoration activities to respond to changing environmental conditions.
- Sharing knowledge across partners and communities to accelerate learning at a global scale.
While every restoration site is different, the mission remains the same: restoring reefs on a global scale in a way that will help them survive the future that's coming.
Is restoration still worth investing in?
Yes - and arguably now more than ever. Events like this highlight the need for active intervention to help reefs recover faster and maintain ecological function. Coral reefs support 25% of all marine life and protect coastlines, alongside other key ecological services. We cannot afford to wait for global emissions to hit net-zero before we protect them. Restoration helps keep critical reef systems alive, maintaining ‘pockets of life’ on reefs, from which reefs can naturally regenerate in the future.
We know we "cannot restore our way out of the climate crisis" - but if we do not restore reefs now, there will be no functional ecosystems left to protect by the time global emissions finally stabilise.
Fortunately, we still have time to identify the best solutions to drive resilient reef recovery and put those tools in the hands of the communities and stakeholders who need them most. This is exactly what MSS and its partners are committed to achieving.
