Big Build Maldives 2024 - Rebuilding Reefs Together

The Big Build brought together critical industries, volunteers, marine biologists to out plant over 15,000 corals, 1000+ Reef Stars across 5 days, marking the largest restoration event in The Maldives!

Can we help save coral reefs? Yes, if we take collective action! In October 2024, Diamonds Thudufushi and Mars, Inc., embarked on a bold mission: the Big Build Maldives, a week-long project that installed over 1,000 reef stars, out planting+15,000 corals on the island’s reef to revive one of nature’s most precious ecosystems. The initiative was driven by a powerful partnership of visionary leaders, marine scientists and an army of enthusiastic local and visiting volunteers. Determined to help coral reefs recover and adapt after a record-breaking year of globally warming oceans, the dedicated team accomplished one of the largest restoration efforts seen to date.

The journey began in 2023, when Diamonds Thudufushi partnered with Mars Inc., utilizing their pioneering Mars Assisted Reef Restoration System (MARRS). The system’s hexagonal metal frames, known as “reef stars,” provide a stable base on degraded reefs for coral fragments to grow and thrive. Initial trials with 203 reef stars on Thudufushi’s reef showed exceptional results, sparking the ambitious goal to expand the restoration site with an additional 1000 reef stars.

But why all the effort? The Maldives, known for colorful coral gardens thriving with marine life, are facing a massive challenge. Climate change, particularly rising sea temperatures and other human disturbances threaten to erase the vibrant underwater paradise. Coral bleaching events have repeatedly impacted the region over the past decades, posing a stark reminder of the vulnerability of these vital ecosystems. Researchers warn that 90% of the world’s coral reefs could be lost by 2050 if no immediate action is taken.

Determined to counter this trajectory on their doorstep, the Big Build Maldives 2024 is a testament to resilience and hope in a time where action is needed. The project brought together restoration experts and marine biologists, engineers, resort staff, locals, guests, and the leadership of Planhotel Hospitality Group. Following months of planning and preparation, manufacturing and coating of reef stars and navigating the challenges of remote island logistics, the dedicated team was ready for the ‘Big Build’. The restaurant deck transformed into a bustling workshop where volunteers attached coral fragments to reef stars under the guidance of Mars’ experts. On the final day, the presence of Planhotel’s president, Ms. Sara Rosso, and Managing Director of Voyages Maldives and Seagull Group, Mr. Salah Shihab, highlighted the project’s importance and unified spirit.

“It was an incredibly fulfilling task, and I learned so much about corals while getting to know other people,” shared one guest, showcasing the unique opportunity for visitors to be part of a lasting environmental legacy.

In such challenging times, large-scale coral restoration not only provides the opportunity to experience and engage in a deeper purpose, but also establishes optimism that nature can recover with a little assistance. Everyone can make a small difference to protect these vital habitats, as our actions today will determine the fate of coral reefs tomorrow!
